Silhouette Maternity photography

Silhouette maternity photography is a beautiful and artistic way to capture the unique moment of your pregnancy. In a normal situation many people don’t like being photographed from their side, but pregnancy is unique in that we want to position you from the side to show that beautiful baby bump! In this style of photography, the expectant mother is usually posed against a source of light that is coming from behind but in a brightly lit manner. such as a lit backdrop, window, or setting sun, while the front area in the client is kept dark. This creates a stark contrast between the dark background and the illuminated outline of the mother's body and shows off the beautiful curve of your little human within.

What are Silhouettes?

Silhouettes in photography refer to images where the subject is portrayed as a solid, usually dark shape against a lighter background. In silhouette maternity photography, this technique is used to emphasize the beautiful curves of the expectant mother's body, particularly showcasing the baby bump. By positioning the mother against a brightly lit backdrop while keeping the front area dark, the silhouette effect accentuates the outline of her form, creating a striking and memorable image.

How do you shoot a maternity silhouette?

Shooting a maternity silhouette involves careful consideration of lighting, posing, and composition. Firstly, it's crucial to position the expectant mother against a strong light source, such as a lit backdrop, window, or setting sun, ensuring that the light comes from behind her. This backlighting creates the contrast needed for the silhouette effect, illuminating the outline of her body while keeping the front area dark. Secondly, thoughtful posing plays a significant role in capturing the essence of the silhouette, emphasizing the curves of the baby bump and the natural contours of the mother's figure. Experimenting with different angles and poses allows for creative expression and ensures a personalized touch to each silhouette photograph. Lastly, attention to composition, including framing and perspective, enhances the visual impact of the silhouette image, resulting in a timeless and artistic portrayal of pregnancy.

Here are my top three favorite reasons as to why we should add Silhouettes into your shoot.

  1. Timeless Elegance: Silhouette maternity photos have a timeless quality that is always enjoyed by everyone. There is a sort of magic and mystery given off by them, and displaying them in black and white looks great no matter what type of decor you have in your home!

  2. Connection: Even though silhouette maternity photography has a beautiful and simplistic feel, there is a beautiful level of symbolism behind it. The contrast between light and shadow can be looked at as a beautiful transition from a womans life into motherhood as your baby goes from being concealed within, the seeing the light of day for the first time. When your parter is included there also is a strong connection between the two in a silhouette image, as we rely heavily on strategic angles to convey your love.

  3. Creativity: Silhouette photography offers endless room for creativity. From trying out different poses and angles to playing with lighting and composition, there are plenty of ways we customize this part of the session to you and your unique story.

When we talk through our styling consultation I will typically ask you if this is a style you would like to add in to your shoot. Most of the time we work this in at the end of our session, as it’s much slower paced and allows you time to rest and relax while my team and I work our lighting magic!
